Characteristics:

  • Size: 2022 Y01 is estimated to be estimated to be between 3 to 3.5 metres (depending on the source of the data)) making it a very small asteroid.
  • Orbit: Its orbit has a perihelion (closest point to the Sun) of 0.928 AU and an aphelion (farthest point from the Sun) of 1.551 AU, with an orbital period of about 1.23 years.

Close Approach in 2024:

  • Date of Approach: December 17, 2024.
  • Distance from Earth: It is expected to pass at a distance of about 2,094,400 kilometres (approximately 1,301400 miles) from Earth, which is about 5 times the distance to the Moon. This makes it a close approach on an astronomical scale but not a dangerous one.
  • Speed: The asteroid will be moving at a velocity relative to Earth of approximately 12 kilometres per second.

Risk Assessment:

  • So there's this asteroid called 2022 Y01 that's gonna swing by Eartth December 2024. It's a pretty small dude, somewhere between like 3 and 4 metres across, this rock has an elliptical orbit that brings it within Earths orbital path and then back out again. Now despite the relatively close encounter, there's no danger of this one actually hitting us. NASA, JPL and other science folks have done the math, tracked its orbit precisely and given it a clean bill of safe passage. Even if it did change course. given it's size it would most likely burn up in our atmosphere.
  • On December 17th, 2024, 2022 Y01 is gonna make its closest approach to our planet. It'll miss us by about a couple of million kilometres, which is a nice comfortable distance - about 1 and 3/4 times farther out than the Moon orbits. The asteroid will be hooking along at over 12 km/s relative to Earth at this point. Go, Go space rock!
